Man vs. Nature

I am always amazed that hardcore Christians go to such great lengths to seperate us from our animal nature. We should be listening to our animal instincts, not denying them.

This is what has happened: We have a biblical traditions which tells us that we are the masters of the world, and that the world we live in is in a fallen, corrupt state, with an absent God ruling from on high someplace, overseeing everything, so to speak. Therefore, we treat the world as though it is here to serve us, when we must serve it. We act superior to nature, but we are nothing more than very intelligent apes. That little bit of extra intelligence and sentience should make us more aware of our place in the world, not warp it.

Almost everything we do has a basis in animal nature. And nature possesses many secrets that we can learn from. Native Americans who lived their entire lives in the wilderness were very much in tune with their environment, and they respected it because to them, the world is divine. It isn't just a world sometimes suffused with divinity; everything around them is a sacred "thou". Animals have special abilities that we don't have, and the world we live in has a wisdom that has existed long before we did.

This brings me to people who demand to know where else in nature homosexuality occurs. We answer that it is not unique to humans, and then someone else says, well, just because it happens in other animals doesn't mean we have to follow our animal instincts. Make up your mind!

But if you're talking about whether or not homosexuality is natural, remember that so much we do is unnatural. It's unnatural to fly, yet we build planes. It's unnatural to use deodorant, but we do. It's unnatural to introduce a bacteria into the body in order to be innoculated for it, but it's vital that we do so. Compared with these things, homosexuality is nothing new.
