I think the difference in thinking symbolically is evident when comparing it to thinking literally about the Garden story. A literal translation has led many to view the world as fallen and corrupt, and it has also made them stress the whole idea of sin and punishment, with terrible results for all. Understanding the story metaphorically brings a more profound understanding of our situation. Meditating on one's sins just keeps you in the subservient position of thinking yourself as a sinner.
