If my comments struck a chord with you, I think you'll find the subject of mythology, especially the important works of Joseph Campbell, to be quite fascinating.
I recommend starting with The Power of Myth. Most of his books are very academic, but this one is a nice introduction because it is culled from a series of PBS interviews with Bill Moyers, so it is more like a conversational lecture than a dense book. From there, there are many other books of his and others which find the common threads of world religions and mythologies.
The same archetypes and motifs have been consistent throughout human history, and these all come from our shared subconscious memories. Our minds work in a way that is almost totally overlooked by most of us living what we loosely call "modern life."
